Wk 15- Classmate Conversation

This week I met a beautiful girl named Kimberly Gutierrez. She is 20 years old and she is a second year nutrition major here at CSULB. Kimberly like to be very active and outdoors, but she also likes to stay indoors and watch movies. She loves to eat a lot and she loves all kinds of food, but anything with pasta is her favorites, she also really loves Mexican Food, but generally all foods! lol. She says if she is not eating, she is at school, at work, or at the gym, but in reality she will most likely be sleeping. Most of her free time she likes to catch up on her sleep. But when in school she is studying and working into becoming a registered dietitian and a certified trainer. She has traveled in the summer of 2014 to Europe. She went to places like Paris, Italy, and London.

About the Artist:

Nancy Young attends here CSULB, and is planning to get her BFA in Print Making this month. She came here with the hopes of graduating with a BFA in graphic design, but something for her did not click. She has a job as a programmer in Orange County, and she really enjoys it. Which is why she states that she does not plan to live off her art pieces. In her spare time between work and school she likes to help others out, likes to go sailing, listen to music, and take pictures. She does say that she is done with school, and she doesn’t have interest in studying more.

Formal Analysis:

Her Exhibition, As the Crow Flies, Contains many types of print making. She explains to us that there isn’t just one type of print making which is why she enjoys it so much. For instance one of the methods that she demonstrated to us was relief. She engraved the  image she wanted to print  into a piece of wood, so that it can become an emboss.Another method that she used was acid onto a piece of metal, I believe. She used the acid to carve into the metal to make the emboss as well for a crow. The Fact that she explained to us how she did it, and she let us touch her pieces of art, made them so unique because none of the artist from this semester have let us do these things.

Content Analysis:

Artist, Nancy Young, told us that on her prints there was certain amount of miles that was written on them. She stated that these were the places she had to go to before she was able to attend CSULB. Which for me was amazing because it gives the audience a story of obstacles she had to pass through in order to get here. This makes sens because she did let us know that she had to stop school when she was younger.

My Experience/Synthesis:

My experience with Nancy Young was great. I really enjoyed listening to story. She presented well her pieces and were amazing. I really enjoyed her letting us touch the emboss of her printmaking. I also really enjoyed her point of view, that there is many different types of print making. I was only educated with only one way that I have seen before in another artist about printmaking, But her methods are extraordinary.

 

Week 14- Activity Feedback

3 Favorite Activities and Why:

• Plaster Casting
  • For this activity, I really enjoyed it because it was something I have never done before. I never used the materials as well so I had to get a little help from my dad. Even though it was something simple, I would have never thought i could creat art with sand, a bucket, and plaster.
• Turning Pages
  • I really enjoyed having an outsider come and speak to us. She demonstrated some of her art, which was very unique. I say outsider because she is from a different country and she explained to us the common art there is in her country.
• Sketching In the Garden
  • This activity was relaxing to me because I was able to just draw without having to be so perfect. Or at least trying to be. I was also able to enjoy it with classmates, and see new things that I have never seen before.

3 Least Favorite Activities and Why:

• Geocaching
  • One of my least favorites because it was so hard to find one!
• Cuisine Couture or coiffure
  • I did not enjoy this activity because I really have a hard time being creative. Also I do not know how to cook, except for cereal, cup o noodles, and frozen pizza.
• Automatic Drawing
  • this was awkward for me. Just sitting there with your eyes clothes with someone else it awkward and I got super nervous. But it was not that bad.

More feedback:

This class was enjoyable. Two things that I really enjoyed throughout this course was that I was able to meet classmates each week. My shyness wasn’t so bad in the middle of the semester and I was just letting lose. Also I really liked that we were able to look up 2 new artist every week because I really didn’t know any artist. Over all, the course was fun and easy.

What could make the class better?

Maybe change up some Tuesdays into drawing Tuesdays. Not saying every single time, but once in a while it would be fun to twist it up and just relax and draw/ paint.

 

Week 14- Art Experience- Drawing at the Japanese Garden

This weeks art experience was something most of the students here in Art 110 were waiting for the entire semester. We did something that we initially expected from this course, but have only done it a couple time, which is not a bad things because it has demonstrated that art is not always about drawing. We went to the Japanese Garden and had to SKETCH( I capitalize this because my drawing are sketches , so they are not perfect) 3 abstract and 3 representational drawings. With this we also had to take 3 representational and 3 abstract images. This experience was kind of relaxing for me, I was able to catch up with some of my classmate that I have met over the weeks. I was able to create my group for our final, or at least talk about it. I had a little more hard time to create the abstract drawings and photographs because when I looked at it, the drawing just looked so random. I didn’t know what is was, it had no figure or anything. But other than that Th experience was good, and enjoyable.

Week 13- Activity-Art Care Package

• How is sending someone an ACP similar to sending someone a Snapchat?
  • I feel like we can get very creative in the things we send by mail and on snap chat. There is all these kinds of random filters that we can use to be creative, and in the same way we can be creative with the things we have at home. Maybe it can represent something, the past the future, something that you enjoy.
• How is sending someone an ACP different from sending them a Snapchat?
  • It takes a lot more time to send a ACP rather than a snap. A snap the person will receive it immediately. It takes about less than  week for someone to receive something by mail, it all depends on the distance. By time we have gotten better with this because we can now get second day shipping !
• What do you think of ephemera? Is it precious? Or trash? Does it gain in value over time? Does your grandma’s parking ticket from half a century ago mean something to you? What about her tickets fromWoodstock? What might your grandkids think if you one day gave them the bead bracelet you wore at Coachella?
  • I feel like the things that I put in will not gain value over time. However, they do represent something personal in my life and maybe someting me and the person I sent it to have in common. For instance I put in an old ripped out image from a magazine I got in the Guadalajara Airport a long time ago about a women in a bikini. For me this represents self love and confidence. Something that I wish every women and not only women but also every person would have because without it can cause damage.
• Is there a difference between art that is seen by many people, like a painting in the Museum of Modern Art, and art that is seen by few, like the ACP you send to someone?
  • I feel like it is very exclusive to the person that it was sent. Something a lot more special because it is one on one. At least for me things are a lot more sentimental when it is shared to only one person rather than a gallery being demonstrated to many.
• You can take a Snapchat and a friend on the other side of the globe can view it, all within seconds. To make an ACP and send it even to a nearby friend will take days. Does this time and effort difference mean something? How is fast better? How is slow better?
  • Of course it does. Social media has taken over and things are being done so differently than before when letter were written to each other. For me it is more about the anxiousness of waiting for the letter to arrive home. The adrenaline you feel at the same time when you have been waiting for a while to receive what has been coming for a while. An example, for high school students, the college acceptance letters. I remember feeling so nervous whenever all of my other friends said they receive theirs already and that they got in to UCLA or other universities.
• People sometimes say things like prepare a meal with love. Can you prepare a meal with love as fast as you can get food at a McDonald’s drive-thru? Does an ACP have the possibility of containing a sort of “love” different from a Snapchat?
  • It is more upon the effort that was put into it. Love can be demonstrated by many ways, some say by a sweet text, and others like I said upon the effort and time that was put into something.

About The Artist :

This weeks artist was Nick Bamford, who was very enjoyable and very different to see. He is a senior here at CSULB and will be graduating this spring with a BFA in ceramics. He said that his education did not end here, he wanted to continue school into UCLA or Yale. Nick Bamford moved from up north to Huntington Beach in which he enjoyed his young age. His inspiration to his art pieces were to challenge himself. Not to use what he has but to do thing he has never done before in order to learn and grow. When he was in High School he did take a ceramics class and it happened to be his favorite and what pursued him to further his knowledge. His favorite artist is Picasso and his hobbies are to build things.

Formal Analysis:

Nick’s exhibition was unlike any other I have seen so far this course. He used so many different colored lights in order to grab dimension into his art sculptures. His main purpose was to give it dimension and to make his sculpture look self lit, things that he did represent very well. He wanted to demonstrate different context and different meanings that made his art really stand out of the ordinary. The room was blacked out and he used a black light in order to make the room stand out more. Including the paper on the wall that he wrote about his exhibition. He had very neon colors all over his sculptures which made you really highlight the main ideas that he wanted you to capture including some of his personal life images.

Content Analysis:

Nick’s art pieces demonstrate different meaning it all depends on how the audience takes it. What I found interesting in every piece that he had was that on each sculpture there was something different. You would stand on one side of the sculpture and you see something interesting and then moves some inches over and see something completely different. He was able to meet his goal of doing it in the dark and do something different that he has never done before. Something that his audience did not see before and didn’t know it was possible to do.

Synthesis/ My experience:

When I first went into the gallery, I was like what the hell why is it so dark here. But then I was actually very entertained among the sculptures. Everything was so different from what I have seen before in these galleries. Something so different, yet kind of urban and hip. The colors made me feel happy. And I was actually glad that Nick likes to step out of his comfort zone, that is not often that I see.

 

 

 

 

Week 13- Classmate convo-Francesca Butler

This week I was able to meet Francesca Butler. She is a dance major, specifically ballet, here at CSULB. She is a senior going to graduate this year and will be moving to San Francisco soon to join LINES Ballet. She currently dances for Jessica Kondrath and the movement professional Dance company. She teaches dance at the YMCA. She is also minoring in Spanish. Her mother is from Argentina, has one older brother and another older sister from Sonoma county. Francesca spends all her time dancing, or rehearsals but when she does have times she loves to go hiking, and traveling. She has been to Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Tanzania, Belize, Amsterdam, and Spain. She wishes she can spend more time doing these extra hobbies and playing with her pet dog named Cholula’s. 

Week 12 Activity- Geocaching

This weeks activity was Geocaching. Myself and some classmates made a group in order to find a Geocache on school Campus. Yeah we failed. I believe the Geocache we were looking for was next to the Galleries. I felt bad for not having to have found the geocache. But I also didn’t feel that bad because we were not the only ones that didn’t find the Geocache. We even asked our professor to help, because we thought we were nuts. We just couldn’t seem to find it. At the end everyone that was looking for this particular Geocache gave up. The professor still stayed to look for the Geocache, he seemed pretty determined to find it. I wonder if he did? This activity really helped me interact with other classmates, and even though this was not a group activity, making it into a group activity helped us learned how to work together.

About the Artist: Jennifer is an artist majoring in print making, she has her bachelor in Biology and is planning to get her master in Printmaking.

Background- Before coming back to school, she worked  for huge health corporations; however, she is experienced in print making for about 20 years she says. She will be teaching an Art class next semester, and her main interest is landscape, and particularly areas that have been damaged by water, fire, or any natural disaster.

Formal Analysis: Her art is based on landscapes in particular from google maps. It seem like she does layers with her pieces because off the landscape she gets from google maps and then the layer of colors and spots she does on the images. She did explain to us that in her paintings she does use gloss in order to make the images a lot glossier.

Content Analysis: Some of her art work brought me back memories of high school, in particular the lunch tables and the restrooms.  The taggings were something I would see often in school

My Experience: I really enjoyed her art, it was something i have never seen before in an art piece.

 

Student Conversation-Rosa Velazquez

This past Thursday I was able to meet Rosa Velazquez, a freshman here at CSULB. She is a business major. We talked about many things like why she decided to come to CSULB. She responded back with saying that she really enjoyed the campus, the vibes were definitely something that she was into. She also said that she chose this campus because it was close to her home, something that we have in common. I also chose this campus because it was close to home but not so close to home. She is from Long Beach herself, but was born in the city of Lakewood, California. One of her hobbies are going out with her friends and family. She loves to go dance with them. She has traveled only to Mexico, just like my self. She loves visiting Mexico because she feels like she is free from any stress, she actually feels free to do anything she want, and she likes to get away. The reason she took this class was because her friend told her to take this class with her, and she also used it as a requirement.
